ShrinkGIF.com is a free online GIF compressor built around a single idea: shrinking your animated GIFs should be fast, private and require nothing more than a browser.
ShrinkGIF reduces the file size of animated GIFs so they load faster and fit within the size limits imposed by apps and services such as Discord, Slack, email providers, forums and blogs. You drop a GIF in, choose a compression level, and download a smaller version — with the animation, timing and transparency preserved.
Most online converters upload your file to a server, process it there and send it back. That means your images travel across the internet and may sit on someone else's storage.
ShrinkGIF takes a different approach. The entire compressor runs inside your browser using JavaScript and the HTML canvas. When you pick a GIF, the file is read locally, its frames are decoded, the colors are reduced, and a new GIF is encoded — all on your own device. The file is never transmitted to our servers, and we have no way to see it.
That is also why ShrinkGIF works offline once the page has loaded, and why there is no upload progress bar: there is no upload.
GIFs are wonderful and terrible at the same time. They animate everywhere, but the format is old and inefficient, so even short clips can be tens of megabytes. We wanted a tool that solves the everyday problem — "this GIF is too big to send or upload" — without asking people to install software, create an account, or hand over their private files.
ShrinkGIF is free. To keep the lights on, the site may display advertising served by Google and its partners. Ads help cover hosting costs while keeping the tool free for everyone. You can read exactly how advertising cookies work — and how to opt out of personalised ads — in our Privacy Policy.
